Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
A "Christian" man once said, "The Bible only speaks of men putting away their wives, not of a wife putting away her husband. Therefore, a woman cannot divorce her husband in God's eyes. A woman's divorce of her husband is only a pretend divorce. Furthermore, only a wife can commit adultery, because men--as long as they're not a bishop--are allowed to have multiple wives...even under the New Testament."
As ludicrous as the above statement might sound, it was actually said. Therefore, let us quickly and easily tear down the lie.
Mark 10: 11-12 says, "And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery."
Jesus teaches that both men and women...husbands and wives commit adultery. To add "pretend divorce" is to add to God's Word, which is forbidden by the Word of God (Deuteronomy, 12th chapter).
The Old Testament allowed polygamy. The New does not.
1 Corinthians 7:2 says, “Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.”
Someone once pointed out, "I Timothy 3:2 tells that the elder must be the “husband of one wife.” I Timothy 5:9 tells that the enlisted widow (a widow supported by the church) must have been the “wife of one husband.” The construction of these two verses is identical. They are written within the same context by the same author. If Paul is prohibiting the elder from the practice of polygamy, then he must have also been prohibiting the enlisted widow from practicing polygamy...which we know is not the case."
In the Old Testament, we see men of God with more than one wife. We do not see this in any part of the New Testament.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
