Commentary to Philippians 3:12-14: The High Calling of God in Christ
The apostle Paul was greatly used by the Lord. He perfomred many miracles, and healed many people. Nevertheless, he wrote, "Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect. But I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended. But this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:12-14).
What Exactly Is The High Calling Of God In Christ Jesus?
It's though-provoking when a great servant of Christ like the apostle Paul says what we read in Philippians 3:12-14. How could this man have been a greater servant than he already was? What could the apostle have meant? He obviously had great faith. He received heavenly revelatios. He planted churches. He endured persecution. What more could he have done to grow in his walk with Christ? Let's see the answer.
1 Corinthians 13:1-3: The Preeminence Of Love
Paul says, "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity (love), I am become as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity (love), I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity (love), it profiteth me nothing" (1 Corinthians 13:1-3).
Before we comment on the passage, let's not forget that there are people who will do anything for attention, to look good in the eyes of others, and for their name to go down in history as a hero or heroin. But that doesn't mean they love.
The apostle understood that the most important thing to God is love for Him and one's neighbor. But why? Because love is what moved Him to save us. St. John 3:16 tells us God gave His only-begotten Son because of His love for us. By the same token, the Son endured the cross because of His love for us. The very plan of salvation is based on love. And let's not forget that EVERY commandment...the entire Law of God rests on the keeping of only two commandments. The first is to love God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength. And the second tells us to love our neighbor as ourselves. Let's think about that. If love is what moves God, why wouldn't it be what should move us? Guided by the Holy Spirit, of course.
Now then, it's important to understand what love is according to God, not according to the dictionary, or to man; because God doesn't want us to be doormats. In any event, this commentary deals with the importance of being filled with the love of Christ. True love is of God, and love is power...a power that can even be manifested in the tangible world. It's a real force. Think about when people--including children--have been able to lift vehicles off their loved one to save his or her life. There have been cases of people saving their loved ones from the jaws of crocodiles. How could they do that? The power of love. Imagine God's servants filled with the love of Christ...a love that surpasses our understanding. Imagine the manifestation of God's love in the world to His glory!
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
