Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Unfortunately, there are Christians who have and continue to misrepresent God in some situations without realizing the danger of such sin because God's punishment is not swift under the New Testament of grace as it was under the Law.
Some years back among the members of a particular denomination, it was common to hear one brother or sister in the Lord claim to have received a divine message from God concerning another brother or sister. The desire to take heed to God's word and to listen attentively to his "messengers" gave rise to the shameful abuse of what was often a false discernment or false prophecy.
Since Old Testament times, men and women have feigned to have received revelations, messages and prophecies from God. In Deuteronomy 18:20 the Lord said, "but the prophet which shall presume to speak a word in my name which I have not commanded him to speak or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die."
Israel was instructed how to deal with the messages of false prophets which still widely circulate today (Deuteronomy 18:21-22). Just as it's the responsibility of the believer to test and discern supposed messages from God, it's also the responsibility of those who are bordering on being false prophets to repent and clean themselves from such attempted deception. Perhaps full realization of the danger of what they are doing is the first step in perfecting holiness in the fear of God (2 Corinthians 7:1).
It should never be forgotten that the "friends" of Job provoked God to anger as they misrepresented him in their speech as they sat with the righteous Job. The scripture of Job 42:7-8 says, "...after the Lord had spoken these words unto Job, the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee and against thy two friends for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right as my servant Job hath. Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams and go to my servant Job and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering and my servant Job shall pray for you, for him will I accept lest I deal with you after your folly in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right like my servant Job."
