Adult Christians often forget that God calls servants for himself from every social status, nation, educational background, and age group, including the very young.
It's not only important for adults to keep themselves reminded of this, but also for Christian teens to avoid the mistake of assuming that their ministry cannot truly begin until they reach the age of majority. Biblical scripture has left an account of the young people who were called and used by God while still in their youth.
The Old Testament book of Jeremiah records when the young prophet was called to be sent to Israel. Scripture says that God ordained the boy even while he was still in his mother's womb. However, Jeremiah, being just a child, responded as most children would respond at the calling to go speak as a representative of God. Jeremiah wrote that he answered the Lord saying, "...Ah Lord God! behold, I cannot speak for I am a child" (KJV, Jeremiah 1:6). However, God's response was, "say not, I am a child, for thou shalt speak. Be not afraid of their faces for I am with thee to deliver thee..." (Jeremiah 1:7-8).
Many years later in the New Testament, the apostle Paul reminds the young Timothy to be an example to believers. The scripture of 1 Timothy 4:12 records Paul's encouraging and stern words to Timothy when he told him, "let no man despise (look down on) thy youth, but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity (love), in spirit, in faith, in purity".
The following verses of the same passage reveal the attention Paul gave to Timothy and show how he nourished Timothy's budding ministry as much as he did that of any other believer. Timothy is strongly advised to diligently read God's word, to exhort others to obey it, to hold on to sound Christian doctrine. He's instructed to meditate on the word of God and to subject himself wholly to the Lord's mandates.
It should be observed that not only was the young Timothy's ministry given the same attention as the ministry of older saints, he was also expected to put in the same amount of work as older believers in order to grow spiritually.
