Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
¿Is it possible to prove that Jesus rose from the dead more than 2,000 years ago? We believe it is. The information we have on the life, death and resurrection of Christ is found in the New Testament of the Christian Bible. We believe it's important to keep in mind that historians and archaeologists subjected the New Testament to the same rigorous criteria as they do every historical document in order to determine its trustworthiness. It's worth mentioning that the Bible (excluding the apocryphal books) passed the authenticity test with flying colors. It's also interesting that we trust the scrolls that tell us about Napoleon, Alexander the Great, king Tut, and many others, although the authenticity--according to the criteria--of those manuscripts doesn't even compare to that of the New Testament, which speaks of Jesus. Nevertheless, we believe all the information we have about Napoleon, Alexander the Great, king Tut, etc. Why do we doubt the biblical account of the resurrection? Do we forget that the New Testament contains the testimonies of eyewitnesses to the resurrected Christ? On one occasion, more than 500 people saw Him. It's possible that a few people were hallucinating. But 500 people at the same time?
We read, "...Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures. And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day, according to the scriptures. And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve. After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once... (1 Corinthians 15:3-6 New Testament).
The above passage is just one of many that recount for us the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. Were those witnesses deceived? That is not possible. Let's take a look at the undeniable facts:
Among the eyewitnesses are the twelve apostles, men who had lived with Jesus for years. Not only did they know what their Lord looked like. They also knew His voice, and how He behaved. When we truly know someone, an impostor cannot deceive us no matter how much he resembles the one we know and love. What's more is that there's no doubt the apostles and other followers knew for certain it was Jesus. The apostles "died as martyrs because they firmly maintained two truths: The deity of Christ and His resurrection. Those men were tortured and whipped. And in the end, they died under some of the cruelest forms of murder known:"
1. Peter: crucified
2. Andrew: crucified
3. James, the son of Zebedee: murdered by sword
4. Philip: crucified
5. Bartholomew: crucified
6. Thomas: pierced with a spear
7. Matthew: murdered by the sword
8. James, son of Alpheus: crucified
9. Thaddeus: shot with arrows
10. Simon, the Zealot: crucified
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
