Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
In the video below, I speak about the men providing food for myself, my young daughter, and my teen son. I couldn't help but recall several other times that I questioned whether my rescue, deliverance, or provision was just something that happened. You know, we all might meet with good fortune just when we need it. Or was it something more? I have to say, my recollection took me to two other incidents in which there was no question that God intervened in my circumstance.
I was homeless with a baby in a new city. I sat crying on a park bench in the downtown area when I looked up and my eye caught sight of a fancy restaurant across the street. The temperature had to be 80 degrees. The baby's bottle was empty, and lined with the remains of soured milk. We were both thirsty as well as hungry. I knew I could at least get a cool drink of water for myself and my child in the restaurant. So, I walked through the doors, and felt the refreshing air conditioning as my feet sank into the most lush carpet. It was nearing lunch time, but the place was empty. I took a seat in a booth and sure enough, the waitress came with a menu and a cold glass of water. My plan was to drink the water, give some to my baby and leave before she could come back to take my order. Before I could do that, however, a man came through the door and headed for my booth. He motioned to the seat across from me and asked if he could sit down. Puzzled, I looked around at all the empty tables and booths and nodded yes. Getting to the point, he told me to order whatever I wanted, instructed the waitress to wash the baby's bottle and fill it. As he stood to leave, he told me to be sure to leave room for dessert. And he departed through the back door as patrons started coming in the front.
I returned to the restaurant a week later to thank the man who had told me that he was the owner. I learned that the owner was out of the country on the day that I was fed. My physical description of the man fit the description of the actual owner. How could he be out of the country and at the restaurant at the same time?
Then, there was the time I had been driving for over fifteen hours. I fell asleep at the wheel and the car with my three children ran off the road. It had been raining for a couple of days so as we left the road the car slid down a muddy embankment instead of tumbling over and over. It was about 3:00 in the morning. We were the only ones on the road in St. Genevieve, Missouri. At least I thought we were the only ones. As my oldest son and I climbed the muddy hill slipping and sliding, we reached the road just as a tow truck shined headlights on us. They immediately stopped, pulled the car up to the road, led us to the nearest motel and offered to pay for our lodging.
Even though I knew the men in the first scenario, I certainly didn't know my rescuers in the other two situations. And to be perfectly honest with you, I don't believe they were ordinary men.
Each of these trying times cannot be luck or chance. They were God's provision.
More testimonies of God's provision are shared in the romance novel, The Beauty of Staying Together, by Vanessa Winters (former title: Detour). Read the first chapter free.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse. Thank you for this video and wonderful message. I believe we sin when we give luck or chance the credit for what God did in our lives to help us. His blessings are not luck!
