Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Unfortunately, some think that to kill, to murder and to execute are all the same. So, "thou shalt not kill"--in their opinion--means it's always wrong to take anyone's life, regardless of the circumstances. Well, that is not at all correct, which the Scriptures of the Holy Bible prove. "Thou shalt not kill" means "thou shalt not murder." It does NOT mean "thou shalt not execute murderers."
At first glance, Leviticus 24:17, which says, "And he that killeth any man shall surely be put to death" appears to be saying that taking someone's life, whatever the reason might be, is always wrong. That is why it is imperative that we differentiate between "kill", "murder" and "execute" in the interest of justice.
In chapter fifteen of First Samuel, we read about when God commanded king Saul to kill all the people of Amalek...the Amalekites, including their king, Agag. But Saul spared the king's life. And in so doing, he got into serious trouble with the Lord. In other words, due to this fault, he was rejected by God. Samuel is the one who carried out justice when he hacked the king into pieces...killing him (1 Samuel 15:33). Samuel did not do that, because that's what he wanted to do, but rather he carried out God's justice, which includes reaping what we've sown (Galatians 6:7, 1 Samuel 15:33).
Samuel did not kill king Agag. He executed him. Let's not forget that God had already said whoever murders must be killed. He or she must be executed (Leviticus 24:17). Agag was a murderer (1 Samuel 15:33), which is why he reaped the death penalty. God Himself is the One who sentenced him to capital punishment. Samuel was just the one who carried the capital punishment out, because Saul wouldn't do it. This is why Samuel did NOT commit murder. God did not brake any of His own laws.
We reiterate. Murdering someone, and the law executing a murderer are two entirely different things. The death penalty is of God. Executioners are God's servants in the sense that they carry out capital punishment. They enforce a law that is of God.
The passage of Romans 13:1-4 describes how a justice system in every nation SHOULD work. We read, "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God. The powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God. And they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same. For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid, for he beareth not the SWORD in vain. For he is the MINISTER OF GOD, A REVENGER to execute WRATH upon him that doeth evil."
The sword represents death...the death penalty. This is one of many passages in the Christian Bible that lets us know that capital punishment IS of God. While murder is not of God, executing the murderer in the the justice system definitely is of the Lord.
