A Christian Analysis of The Machine Stops by EM Forster
For those who would prefer to read the short story, The Machine Stops by EM Forster in Spanish, there is an "unofficial", but excellent translation by Marcos Buccellato entitled, La mquina se para.
Our opinion of The Machine Stops by EM Forster
It is an excellent novel. Some call it a type of prophecy regarding technology that has indeed become an electronic god that is worshiped worldwide. A god that is a machine whose artificial intelligence has surpassed that of the men who manufactured it, but who can no longer control it.
Well, it's not that they can't control it. What's going on is that the masses--instead of pondering things--continually allow themselves to be deceived. But each person is responsible for making his own decisions. We believe the author tried to send that message through the character of Kuno. He was young, but he didn't even listen to his mother Vashti who was like the average person who never thinks. The sad part is that all meet with a tragic end. Will The Machine Stops cause the idiots who've surrendered their lives to technology to open their eyes? In the end, Vashti says, "Humanity has learned its lesson." One would think her words indicate that she has learned her lesson. Nothing could be further from the truth. Kuno is the intelligent one. And he shows it when he says, "Tomorrow...some idiot will restart the Machine." Some people don't learn their lesson even when they're dying. It might be said that they'll learn it in the hereafter...when it's too late. But when it's too late, do you really learn anything? We simply pay the consequences.
The Machine Stops Predicts the Pandemic of Covid-19 and the Quarentine?
Unlike many people, we are not impressed by the story as far as it being labeled as amazing and prophetic. Someone said, "A vissionary author was able to imagine a future much like the one we're living today." Well, we don't share that opinion. Every author, unless he limits himself to writing true stories, should know how to use the creative power of the imagination. Right?
Are we not going to take into consideration the fact that there was a technological explosion in 1900? The fact that homes didn't have television doesn't mean the world didn't have some very serious technology back then. In 1903, Henry Ford produced the Model T. We read that "around the beginning of 1900, the old...types of transportation were being improved by the use of new types of energy. Electrical and internal combustion engines powered ships, trains, cars, coaches and airplanes. Railroads began to electrify locomotives.
It goes without saying that EM Forster was aware of the new technology of his day. Therefore, we do not see anything special in imagining The Machine and all the ills of societies it caused. And what about the isolation? What about the part of The Machine Stops where the characters practice social distancing? And the respirators? Is it possible that Forster predicted the Covid-19 pandemic? We don't think so. Although what he could have predicted is the huge mess in which we're found thanks to the excessive use of technology that is too advanced.
Those newly invented engines Forster must have seen release smoke. They pollute the planet's atmosphere. That's why the characters must use respirators. If The Machine Stops is fascinating because of the author's ability to foresee the future, what about the Bible? Forster wrote his story after he saw technology in practice. On the other hand, the prophets of God wrote about technology not having seen any. That truly is amazing. Consider this: They can now implant microchips in people. And they plan to soon began implanting them in the forehead or the right hand. Although we have reason NOT to believe that the mark of the beast will simply be the implantation of a chip, there's no doubt that this was prophesied in the Bible, in the book of Revelation. In the book of Revelation, we're even told the mark of the beast will be received in the right hand or the forehead.
The prophet Daniel told us that knowledge would be increased. He said this thousands of years before there was any technology. If The Machine Stops by EM Forster is an amazing story, the Scriptures of the prophets of God are a miracle. Summing it up, we like Forster's story. We believe it sends a very good message--a warning which few people are heeding. What a shame.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
