Christianity and the African American Way of Life in Race Films
Race films and race movies are terms used to refer to films made from the early 1900s to the 1950s in which the protagonists are African American. Some of the directors for these films also were African American. Others were Caucasian. Most race films have been lost through the years. Among the ones that continue to endure are Lying Lips (1939), Go Down, Death! and The Blood of Jesus, which you may watch for free right here. Simply scroll down, and click on the movie of your choice. Each viewer will form his own opinion. However, the general opinion regarding these race movies is that the quality is very poor in terms of acting and direction. We agree with that general opinion.
The African American Way of Life in Race Movies
Nevertheless, these films have historical value. They are the evidence of African Americans' interest in the film industry, their adherence to Christianity, their struggles in American society, their music and their dress in those days. Despite their poverty, they dressed well. The women had naturally beautiful hair that they straightened with a hot comb, curled and styled fashionably. Undoubtedly, if the African Americans in those race films could see their descendants today, many would be appalled at their dress and "hairstyles." Today, many Black women flaunt synthetic ropes, cords and strings on their head for "hair." Perhaps the length of the ropes makes statements such as, "Look at how much I paid for this stuff on my head." Or, "I know it's fake, but fake is fashionable nowadays." This is easily interpreted by many as, "If you can't beat the fight to grow real hair, join the defeated, and wear synthetic ropes...and flaunt it."
In Lying Lips, we see a decent, law-abiding man showing respect for a decent woman. We see that the African American church is filled with regular church-goers who dress in respect for God's house. Many of these ways have disappeared to the detriment of a people and a branch of American society as a whole.
Christianity in Race Films
In race movies such as The Blood of Jesus, viewers hear the beautiful singing of the church during the scene in which they're heading to the river for water baptism. We're also reminded...or introduced--depending on your background--to basic biblical truths, something which is missing in the majority of modern movies.

Keep in mind that instead of "African American," you will hear the outdated terms "Negro" and "colored." The term "Black" might have been used in some of the later race movies. And while "Negro" and "colored" are considered derogatory in our times, they were perfectly acceptable terms in the days of the making of race films.
Lying Lips 1939
A drama by Oscar Micheau tells the story of a night club singer who refuses to "entertain" certain customers. In retaliation, she is framed for the murder of her aunt and imprisoned. She has a buddy who is a police officer who goes to work to prove that she is innocent.
Go Down, Death! 1944
The owner of a juke joint plots the frame of a Christian preacher by arranging for a scandalous photograph of him to be taken.
The Blood of Jesus 1941
This race film by Spencer Williams Jr., an African American director, tackles morality as defined by the Holy Bible. An important decision must be made after the occurrence of an accidental death.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
