Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Glory Days by Max Lucado is one of the best books based on the Christian Bible for encouraging believers in Jesus battling against unbelief. There are genuine followers of Christ who are struggling to believe God for what truly is impossible for them. They might be struggling against an addiction, temptation or guilt. Many struggle to believe God for good things...blessings they've never received. Perhaps life has been cruel to them. Perhaps they're simply weak in their faith. Perhaps they don't view themselves as worthy to receive God's unmerited favor and blessing. What matters is God's will. When it's His delight to bless us, our response should be one of delight and expectation to receive His blessing. Sadly, however, many Christians struggle with faith for what seems impossible, especially when so much time has passed. But think of it this way: You've fought and held on for so long. You can't turn away now and let all your battling end up being for nought.
But how do you keep fighting when you're so tired? Sometimes we have to just keep going robotically until we're restored to full strength. In Glory Days, brother Max Lucado gives us practical Bible-based lessons, which we can put into practice to help us to keep going. You will look at the story of Joshua's leadership of Israel's army in a way that is probably very different from how you're used to looking at it. Very few people realize what he was facing. Without God, it would have been impossible for Israel to even survive, let alone win the many battles they fought. Brother Lucado, through his great literary talent, opens our eyes to what was a very real situation that people faced...just as real as your situation. At the same time, he makes us to see how they could have easily crumbled in the face of life and death situations. But they didn't crumble. And they did more than survive. They triumphed. However, like people today, they made some mistakes...grave mistakes from which they had to recover.
But in addition to driving home the magnitude of what real people faced in those days, brother Lucado also weaves into his writing the real-life testimonies of people today who faced odds that, without God, were truly insurmountable. One of the most important things to remember about Max Lucado's Glory Days is that if you are in the heat of the battle for your mind, there's great need to read this book over and over and over again. Why? Because we are surrounded by sin, evil and negativity in this world. If we don't fill our mind with God's Word, it will be filled with Satan's lies. One thing for sure is that our mind will not just remain blank. Therefore, we must actively fill it up with God's promises, God's Word, so we leave no room for the enemy's lies. Max Lucado compares the mind to a sponge soaked with a substance. Even if that soaked sponge is placed in a different solution, it cannot absorb that other solution. There's no more room. It is already soaked. That is how we want our mind to be: soaked with God's Word.
Remember, the message of Glory Days does not apply to the unbeliever who has no relationship with the Lord. It is to the believer who has come out of spiritual bondage in Egypt, but who is struggling to enter his or her spiritual Promised Land. We love how the author begins by teaching his readers that the Promised Land is not paradise in the hereafter. It refers to the experience of God's blessing right here on earth BEFORE we die. He makes us to understand that God's blessings here are a shadow of the glory that is to come for those who remain faithful unto death. We can choose to live a defeated life, or one that is victorious in Jesus. While that is easy to say, it can be most difficult to do. In fact, it is impossible to do without the love, help and mercy of the Lord Jesus.
Again, read Glory Days over and over and over again, along with your regular and daily study of the Bible. As you learn to be encouraged, learn to encourage other brethren who are fighting the good fight of faith to the glory of God.
Max Lucado's Glory Days is also available in Spanish under the title: Días de Gloria.
