This review of Free-ebooks.net for self-published writers is based on actual tests...real experience using that website to gain exposure for authors' literary works. As with virtually every service, some experiences are positive, others are negative. Here are, however, some hard facts you might want to keep in mind when wondering how to market your self-published book.
Free-ebooks.net Is a Readers' Haven, NOT a Writers Haven!
A review of Free-ebooks.net for self-published writers would not be complete without pointing out the disturbing fact that even Free-ebooks.net advertises and promotes their site with slogans such as, "Free Reading for Life!" What does that tell us? That the site owners and the readers are the ones who benefit from the hard labor of some of the world's most talented writers...unknown or not. Think about it. With thousands upon thousands of excellent free books of virtually every genre, who needs to reach into their pocket to purchase? Self-published writers, beware of Free-ebooks.net as well as other websites whose owners and managers care nothing about helping you to truly promote your literary masterpiece. If they did, they would not require you to upload your entire book. Why not allow you to upload up to fifty percent of book? That is more than sufficient to allow readers to know whether they like an unknown author's style. There can be only one reason for the requirement to give your entire masterpiece away for free: Satisfy the readers who will keep returning to their site for free content and more free content. It is no wonder that despite the channels the internet have opened up for self-published authors, the doors to success remain closed to scores of them. What is one of the most important things you can learn from this review of Free-ebooks.net for self-published writers? Never give your entire book away for free. That includes novellas and novelettes. If you're a writer of short stories, it's a good idea to release an entire story to the public, so readers can get to know your style. However, giving your books away allows greedy internet site owners to continue profiting from your hard work and talent. Readers would cease to have a totally free endless supply of great books.
Should I Pay to Advertise My Book on Free-ebooks.net?
In our review of Free-ebooks.net for self-published writers, we considered the option of paid advertisements. When we conducted our tests, it cost US$100.00 to advertise your book on the home page of Free-ebooks.net for one week. That comes to $400.00 a month. While that might not sound like a lot of money considering the impressive number of visitors the site has, it is beyond the meager budgets of many self-published writers. And even if we say that that advertisement could gain you a thousand downloads of your book a week, you've paid $400.00 for 4,000 downloads...free downloads, mind you. You have not earned one penny. And though you may have gained a few fans, you might ask yourself what type of fans are they? Are they simply waiting for you to release another free book? Or are they willing to start purchasing your books from your own website, blog or Facebook page? Sadly, the former is the norm. Where does that leave the author? What are his or her benefits? How has he or she gained? There are three parties in this: The writer, the reader and Free-ebooks.net. The reader enjoyed a free book. Free-ebooks.net gained a repeat visitor. The more visitors they have, the more they earn with advertisements. The self-published author is the only one who gains virtually nothing...unless the goal is to entertain and teach others for free. If that is your goal, sites like Free-ebooks.net will certainly help you to attain it. It is not, however, the goal of the vast majority of self-published authors.
What About Donations from Readers?
Again, this review of Free-ebooks.net for self-published writers would not be complete if we didn't mention the opportunity the site provides for readers to donate to authors who have a PayPal.com account. Sounds wonderful. But it can only be wonderful if readers actually value writers' work enough to follow through with making a donation. It's probably safe to predict that you won't even fill a piggy bank up in a year with donations. Again, why pay even the greatest author on Free-ebooks.net when there's a host of other excelent authors of every genre on that and other sites? And all their works are also free. That's the problem. Free, free, free is not good for anyone but the ones receiving the free item. It's not even totally good for them. People value what they have to pay for. When authors can earn a living writing, they are happier people. Happier people make for a happier and safer society. People should be paid for their work. That includes self-published authors. To sum it all up, our advice to self-published writers is: Stop giving your literary works away. This is one of the worst mistakes self-published authors make. We hope this review of Free-ebooks.net for self-published writers has been helpful and encouraging.
