Learn English from Native Speakers If You Really Want to Speak the Language Correctly
Many native Spanish-speakers who've studied English for years continue to speak English incorrectly. Some never really come to speak the real language at all, meaning they never come to understand movies in English. Why is that? How do these students improve their English? How do they become fluent? How do they learn to speak correct English? Our first recommendation would be to accept the advice of true bilinguals who speak two languages correctly and fluently; and are able to effectively deal with native speakers from all walks of life.
Learn English from Native Speakers!
This article focuses on the Spanish-speaker seeking to learn to effectively communicate in correct English. However, the advice offered is useful for any and every student of a foreign language. We recently observed the stubbornness in native Spanish-speakers on a particular site who are studying English. Their posts on the site are evidence that they are far from mastering the English language, yet they continue to stubbornly reject sound advice regarding language learning. Below are a couple of the paraphrased statements made by these speakers and our response:
1. "I live in the United States, so my English is advanced enough to help those of you who don't live in an English-speaking country."
Our response: First of all, the United States is no longer an "English-speaking" country to the point where anyone can say that living here automatically forces you to communicate in English. This is a truth that far too few non-native speakers who live in Spanish-speaking countries know. Second, living in the United States does not in any way raise you to the level of a native English-speaker. Let's face it. If you began learning a foreign language after the age of 12, you are no match for a native who has spoken the language all of his or her life. Third, if you really want to help other Spanish-speakers learn English, point them to natives. Although not every native speaks correct English, he at least has an ability you don't. That ability is effective communication in a language you don't really know. His or her pronunciation is native. And he never makes the mistakes you as a foreign speaker makes. In every language there are speakers who don't always speak correctly. And there are speakers with various accents. There are speakers with various levels of education. However, unless you want to limit yourself to dealing exclusively with the college-educated, why would you reject a native who might not speak perfectly in favor of someone who learned English? There's no doubt that that foreigner who learned English does not speak perfect English...far from it. You can count on him to consistently make mistakes in grammar, not to mention a less-than-native pronunciation.
2. "You don't need to study and learn English with a native speaker, but rather with someone who has a teaching degree."
Our response: Again, this statement reflects failure to understand the native advantage. Do you really think that a teaching degree elevates the one who learned English to the height of the native? Not a chance. When you learned your native language, did you learn from teachers and professors who hold a degree? No, you did not. You learned by ear, by being exposed to the language, by repeating, and by asking questions. You learned from every native with whom you had dealings. But suddenly when it comes to learning a second language, all that goes out the window? Ridiculous. Language is learned through speaking with natives who are kind and patient enough to correct, guide and encourage you. But if you want to dismiss good advice, go right ahead. You will never achieve native proficiency in English or any other language until you learn to value the strength and importance of the native speaker. It's your choice.
