Should American Pastors of Christian Churches Learn a Foreign Language?
A small church composed of native Spanish-speakers from various parts of Central and South America found themselves without a pastor. They continued to meet, however, something for which they should be commended. Unfortunately, while they diligently searched for a pastor, they had somewhat of a closed mind. They only sought after native Spanish-speaking, ordained ministers whom they figured were the best candidates for the job. One day, through circumstances unknown to us, they came across a Spanish English bilingual American minister. They then began to ask, "Could bilingual American pastors of Christian churches be possible candidates?" Bingo! At least they were exploring an idea that might just be the answer. This lesson is valuable not only to groups of believers who don't speak English, but also to American pastors who would do well to learn a foreign language. Let's face it. There is a growing number of people who will continue to reside in the United States without ever truly learning the English language. Among such people are those who will receive the gospel of Jesus, and become mighty servants in the Lord's work. Should we let a language barrier interfere with winning them to Christ? Absolutely not! When we broaden our perspectives, this means we don't just focus on English classes for those who don't know the language. We also begin to focus on foreign language classes for Americans to increase bilingualism among Christians, especially American pastors. Perhaps we should not have to rely on referring souls who don't speak English to a pastor who is a native speaker of their language.
American Pastors, Learn a Foreign Language
Granted, some pastors are too busy to take the time to learn to effectively and correctly communicate in a foreign language, especially if it comes difficult for them. However, many do have the time, and would enjoy it. It's just that they've never really given it any serious thought. Bilingualism among true, born-again Christians, especially pastors, is a blessed thing. It's knowledge that can be put to good use within God's kingdom. When we say this, we're not exactly referring to attempts to have bilingual church service. That can be a real challenge that not everyone likes. The same can be said for bilingual Bible study. However, it is something that willing members can do from time to time...perhaps once a month or once every six weeks. Bilingual American pastors of Christian churches would probably be more effective holding two services: one for English and another in the foreign language. If there are bilingual members of the congregation who would also be willing to help out as translators and interpreters, wonderful! However, it's a good idea to keep things professional. Interpreters and translators, even as volunteers, need to interpret and translate in a professional manner, always rendering an accurate interpretation or translation. A quick note to readers: We say "American" in reference to Christians and Christian pastors from the United States without regard to the accusation of some that it is arrogant for people from the U.S.A to refer to themselves as Americans, given that Central and South Americans share the continent, and are American also. Let us not forget that "America" is part of the very name of this nation. Every other American on the continent is free to refer to himself according to the name of his nation: Mexican from Mexico, Bolivian from Bolivia, Peruvian from Peru. Therefore, following the same pattern, we say, "American from the United States of America." Conclusion: Americans can call themselves by the name of their country just as all other Americans on the continent do. Those other countries had the same opportunity to include the name of the continent (America) in the name of their country. They chose not to do so. The United States of America did choose to do so. Therefore, people from this nation have every right to call themselves Americans, without being labeled arrogant for that reason alone.
