Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
There's all kinds of advice and "help" available for every type of problem mankind can experience. However, that advice and "help" often goes against God's Word. And though the one in trouble might experience relief and receive what appears to be the answer, there's a heavy price to pay later. The same is true in the case of domestic violence. There is a great need for truly Bible based Christian marriage counseling. Why? Because genuine believers in Jesus know that God's Word addresses every problem man can face on this earth. We also know that we need God's Spirit to help us to know how to apply that divine wisdom to our personal situation. Remember, Jesus is a PERSONAL Savior. He will guide us in our personal life.
The Beauty of Staying Together by Vanessa Winters is the true account of a young battered wife who learned the hard way to do things God's way. She made mistakes. She yelled at God. She endured the misery of doubt, uncertainty and frustration on top of physical and verbal abuse. This real-life account domestic violence is not a cookie-cutter message for troubled marriages. Domestic violence must be taken seriously, because death can quickly become the tragic result of it. On the same note, Bible based Christian marriage counseling, when accepted by both parties, figures among the most powerful and influential ways of showing the power of God. No, God is not in domestic abuse and violence of any kind. But yes, God is able to change men who beat their wives...if they WANT to be changed. No, God does NOT tell women to stay and endure physical and verbal abuse. But yes, God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16). All too often harsh, but extremely important truths, must be emphasized uncompromisingly in order to truly offer Bible based Christian marriage counseling.
The reason we stress the need for counseling to be Bible based is because Western society has now been poisoned by so many anti-Christian messages disguised as Christian answers to problems. People are told to practice yoga to improve health. They are told to practice Eastern meditation to relieve stress. They are advised to perform chakra cleansing, to undergo hypnosis, to get their karma in order, to call on beings of light, to conjure up their guardian angel, and a host of other spiritual and deadly practices. Mix that kind of advice with the danger of domestic violence, and we only move further away from Bible based Christian marriage counseling. Beware! Many psychologists and therapists have set themselves up as "Christian" counselors. They even have a Bible in sight in their office and biblical Scripture on their walls and in their literature. They can easily pass as Christian counselors, because with the shamefully deficient knowledge of the Bible most people have, they're easily deceived. Just quote a Scripture and, bingo, you're Christian. It truly is sad.
The Beauty of Staying Together is a very unique book in that the ugliness of men who beat their wives and the foolishness of women who justify it with "the man is the head of the household" are revealed. Comments on this book include:
"The Beauty of Staying Together should be recommended reading for social work majors and pastors."
"The Beauty of Staying Together will make you laugh and cry. But in the end, you will be left with an unforgettable message."
"The first chapter of this book really made me question whether I should pursue a career as a marriage counselor."
Bible based Christian marriage counseling can be most rewarding. It can also be most challenging. But then, many things most rewarding are also most challenging.
