Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Christian help for troubled marriages doesn't have to involve expensive sessions with marriage counselors who might not offer biblically sound answers and instruction, though they claim to be Christian. Vanessa Winters, the author of The Beauty of Staying Together, was very pleasantly surprised to learn from the mouth of her next-door neighbor that he and his wife not only read the book together, but also started a discussion group with another couple that lasted several weeks. Marriages on the rocks can, and are being saved by couples momentarily stepping outside of their “roles” to better focus on the rocky and even abusive relationship on which the novel, based on true events, deals.
By all appearances, the couple should consider themselves high on the list of couples in trouble. And though both have been introduced to Christianity, and have heard of God's power to restore love, even Christian help for troubled marriages sounds useless in the face of their situation--but it isn't.
You might be thinking, “People don't ever change, no matter what.” And that's true--when they have no desire to change. They must want change for themselves. If, and once they reach a burning desire to change in order to make their marriage work, great things happen--just as they do in The Beauty of Staying Together, which has sparked lively and very thought-provoking discussions among men and women on the subject of Christian help for troubled marriages. The unique approach of reaching out to married couples in trouble involves the telling of someone else's story who's in the same “boat.” Why not just always speak directly to each couple? Because sometimes the direct approach is ineffective for various reasons, including, but not limited to the following:
1. When the focus is on them, some people become defensive, even where there's no attack.
2. It's often hard to see ourselves when we're close to the situation or problem.
3. Though we should never take delight in the misfortunes of others, hearing of them helps us to realize we're not the only one in our predicament.
4. Most of the time, we need to learn about our faults and weaknesses in “small chunks.” When we see ourselves in others, revelation that we're like them tends to come slower than just having someone blurt out all our flaws.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
