Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Does the Christian Bible say that speaking in tongues is a sign of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, also known as the Holy Ghost? When the Bible speaks of someone receiving the baptism, we read that that person spoke in tongues. The scripture of Acts 2:4 says, "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."
Let us look at another passage in Acts 10:45-46, which says, "And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God...."
And, Acts 8:18 says, "And when Simon SAW that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money."
Take note that the scripture above says, "And when Simon SAW" that the Holy Ghost was given.... The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God (see the fifth chapter of the Acts, and 2 Corinthians 3:17). And, the Bible tells us that God is INVISIBLE (1 Timothy 1:17). So then, the use of the word "SAW" causes us to understand that there was some type of visible manifestation that took place at the moment people received the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Since the other scriptures let us know that the visible manifestation was speaking in tongues, should we not believe that the very same thing occurred in this passage? The passage says that Simon SAW the VISIBLE and AUDIBLE sign of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. What is it that Simon SAW other than the phenomenon of speaking in tongues?
It should be noted, however, that the fact that a true believer in Jesus Christ may have never spoken in tongues does NOT mean that he or she has not received the baptism of the Holy Ghost.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
