What Is the Second Death of Which the Christian Bible Speaks?
Does Life After Death Mean that There Will Be Death in the Hereafter?
The scripture of Hebrews 9:27 says, "...It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment". Upon first glance, this scripture appears to say that men only have to die once, which is true. However, it is referring to the death of the physical body and to its departure from this world. There also exists what is known, according to the Christian Bible, as the second death, which will take place in the hereafter, in the day of judgment to be specific.
But, we should bear in mind that to suffer the second death is not like dying physically. It does not mean that the spiritual body will depart the spiritual world like the physical body, when it dies, departs this world. Will death be in the hereafter? Yes, it will, but not in the sense in which we think of the death of the physical body as we know death.
The Second Death According to the Word of God
The scripture of Revelation 20:12-15 explains to us what the second death is. It says, "And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God. And the books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. THIS IS THE SECOND DEATH. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire".
Unlike dying physically, dying in the hereafter means that your name is not written in the book of life. It means being thrown into the lake of fire. It means not spending eternity in the presence of the Lord (eternal life). Although most Christian churches have ceased to preach on the reality of the lake of fire, that does not mean that the lake of fire has ceased to exist. It does not mean that the warnings of Christ on such a place have been annuled.
It's necessary to understand what it means to be saved. Many people say that a person is saved by good works. Others teach that one is saved through the traditions and rites of the church. And, there are people who work miracles, prophesy, cast out demons, and even heal in the name of Jesus. But, they are not servants of the Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God, and one of the three persons of the Godhead (Trinity). They serve another Jesus.
The Bible warns us that there are people who believe that they will not suffer the second death. But they will, because in reality they do not serve the Lord Jesus.
"Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: Depart from me, ye that work iniquity" (Matthew 7:22-23).
