When the Jehovas Witness Denies the Divinity of the Son of God
The Son of God: God Incarnate
A Jehovah's witness commonly cites scriptures that appear to say that Jesus was no more than a man, but he or she cannot answer certain questions. For example, when St. John 1:1 is quoted, which says, "...The Word was with God, and the Word was God", Jehovah's witnesses focus on, "the Word was with God" as though, "And the Word WAS God" does not appear in the very same verse. Later in the same chapter we read, "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us."
The Firstborn of All Creation
Colossians 1:15 says that Jesus is the firstborn of all creation. "Firstborn" does not refer to being the first one born. If this were the case, Jacob would never have been able to steal Esau's birthright. And the entire nation of Israel is referred to as the "firstborn" (Exodus 4:22). Start learning to apply the biblical definition of "firstborn". The physical body of Christ was CREATED directly by God the Holy Spirit, and not through a biological father. Of course that created body, which housed the Lord Himself is superior to all other. That is the meaning of "firstborn of all creation."
At the same time, let us not forget that the scriptures also told us that the Word was God and that that Word was made flesh. That means that God was made flesh. The question for the Jehovah's witness is this: Why should we accept "The Word was with God" but reject "The Word WAS God"? If we say that Christ was a mere man, we are left without a response for the scripture of St. John 1:1 that plainly tells us that the Word was God.
Explaining Philippians 2:6-7 According to the Jehovah's Witness
When speaking of the divinity of Jesus, Jehovah's witnesses often cite Philippians 2:6-7 to prove that Jesus is not equal with God. But, they do not answer the question of why in the same passage do we read that Christ "was made in the likeness of men" (Philippians 2:7-8). Why would the scripture say that a mere man was made in the likeness of something he already was? Since it was necessary for Jesus to be made in the likeness of men, we know that he was not a mere man. And, why do we read that Jesus was "found in fashion as a man"? Are not all men already fashioned as men? Why then does scripture say that Jesus was FOUND (a temporary state) in fashion as a man. Such a thing does not need to be said of someone who is just a mere man anyway.
It is clear that we are talking about a temporary condition outside of his nature. The fact that scripture lets us know that Christ was made in the likeness of a man tells us that he was something other than a mere man. Obviously, he was something or someone who is not of a human nature. Mere men are not made in the likeness of what they already are--mere mortals. The Jehovah's witness does not answer this legitimate fact.
God in Three Persons
Why would a one-person God say what was said in a most revealing passage in the first book of the Bible? Genesis 1:26 says, "And God said, Let US make man in OUR image, after OUR likeness...." This is another question that is not answered by the Jehovah's witness. Are we to say that a single person speaks like that? No, a single person would have said something like, "I am going to make man in my image." But, that is not what was said. We read, "Let US", and "our", which denote divine plurality.
If we read the eighteenth chapter of Genesis, we see that the Lord appeared to Abraham. And, when he appeared, Abraham saw THREE men. And, he called all three Lord (verses 1 and 2). The Lord cannot say any clearer that he is in three persons. Why would we insist on rejecting the plurality of the God of Israel--the same plurality that is seen in the Old Testament as well as the New?
Proving the Divinity of Jesus
The Jehovah's witness cannot answer the question: How is it that Jesus did things that only God can do?
1. He forgave sin (Mark 2:5-7).
2. He raised himself from the dead (St. John 10:17-18).
3. He rebuked the storm and it obeyed him (Mat. 8:23-27). Psalm 89:8-9 lets us know that God is the only one who rebukes the elements (weather) and they obey him.
We end here because there is no need to continue to making a long list of scriptural evidence that the Lord teaches us that Jesus is God because he is the Word, and the Word is God (St. John 1:1). And, at the same time we are taught that he was a man because the word was made flesh (St. John 1:14). There is a reason why the Old Testament prophecies concerning Jesus call Christ: Emanuel. Emanuel means God with us. The Jehovah's witness cannot answer these questions, because if they did, they would loose the foundation on which the antichristian doctrine is built.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
