The Mysteries of Christianity by José Gregorio González: A Review of the Book
On the back cover of the book, Enigmas del Cristianismo (Enigmas of Christianity), by José Gregorio González, we read, "This is a work in which the reader is invited to explore the greatest mysteries linked to Christianity...." (English translation of the original Spanish). The author, though he does indeed deal with topics such as the Ark of the Covenant, and the Great Deluge, fails to deliver on his word as far as the subject of mysteries related to Christianity goes.
Mysteries of Christianity or Enigmas of Catholicism?
There are three major problems with the book that we are mentioning.
1. It's evident, judging by the content of the book, that the author, José Gregorio González, neither knows nor understands the Scriptures of the Christian Bible, nor the message of the gospel that they preach to us. If he did understand them, he would not have called Christian what is in reality Catholic. For example, the author touches on the subject of apparitions of Mary, the mother Jesus, a phenomenon that is characteristic of Catholicism, which not only is accepting of the worship of Mary, the mother of Jesus, but also encourages this, and other practices of idolatry, which are abominable in Christianity, a faith that lifts up the Son of God, not Mary.
In the scripture of Luke 11:27-28, we read, "And it came to pass, as he (Christ) spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it." Take notice that the woman in the crowd focused on Mary, while Christ focused on the need to obey the word of God. And, he is the word of God (St. John 1:1, 14).
2. In his book, Enigmas of Christianity, Mr. González labels Christian any thing, saying, phenomenon, apparition, event, or whatever it might be that looks Christian to him. And, judging by the content of the book, all anyone has to do is say that he or she is Christian for the author to label him or her as Christian. So, people who say that they are Christian always are? To believe such a thing is ridiculous. In Revelation 2:9, the resurrected Christ said, "I know them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan."
3. It is very difficult to believe that José Gregorio González has never heard of the major differences between Catholicism and Protestantism since he does so much investigating into the major mysteries "linked to Christianity."
We have published various articles that, from the scriptural perspective, touch on the subject of the so-called mysteries connected to Christianity. Too many people whose knowledge of the Bible is shamefully inadequate try to expound on the things of Christianity. This almost always leads them to confusing the paranormal, supernatural, and what is Catholic with what is Christian.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
