What Does a Ghost Writer Do?
The definition of what a ghost writer does varies slightly from person to person and from region to region. However, a basic definition is: someone who professionally writes your story for you to prepare it for publication. Does that mean that ghost writing services include professional editing? You will want to ask the person with whom you will be working to write your story. Many ghost writers are also editors. However, others might work with an editor. If you will be self-publishing your book, you might also want to inquire about help with jacket design for the book, promotional write-ups, purchase of an ISBN number, printing services, copyright services, marketing, and even derivative works. Examples of a derivative work might include: translation, electronic book publication, the making of an audio version of the work, etc.
Choosing a Ghost Writer
So, what characteristics and/or credentials should you look for in a ghost writer? Generally, it is a good idea to look for someone who has had a work published. Please note that we are NOT referring to self-published works, because virtually everyone has the freedom to self-publish. We are NOT saying, however, that the writer should have published a book. A writer's published works that attest to his or her ability to write your story might include, but are not limited to: works of fiction of various lengths, biographies, articles, creative non-fiction, etc.
When we say "published", we are referring to the fact that an entity who is not a friend or relative, but may be an individual or a company, reviewed and approved the writer's work for publication on or in the following: a website, blog, magazine, ezine, book, or database. Genuine publishers, regardless of their size, desire only the best material for their readers, viewers, and listeners, knowing that their reputation is always on the line. Simply inquire of the ghost writer regarding the works that he or she has had published. You should be able to verify the information.
Also, keep in mind the genre of your project. If your project is a work of fiction, you might want to work with someone who specializes in fiction. On the other hand, if your project is non-fiction, it's almost always recommended to hire a ghost writer who specializes in non-fiction. These are only broad categories that can be sub-divided into smaller ones such as: horror, spirituality, adventure, fantasy, romance, etc.
While it might not appear to be of great importance, we believe that you should have a good working relationship with your ghost writer. Part of having a good relationship with someone is having open communication and maintaining regular contact. Remember, the ghost writer has the job of communicating your ideas and thoughts on paper. The writer cannot do this for you if he or she has not worked with you in a way to know exactly what thoughts and ideas you wish to put forth in your work.
