What Is Tartar?
Tartar, sometimes called dental calculus or calculi, is dental plaque bacteria that has hardened on your teeth from mineral deposits on the plaque bacteria. It can also form on the gum line and under them, and cause irritation to the gingival tissues. Tartar provides the plaque with a larger and stickier surface area to which it can stick and grow, which leads to more serious problems such as cavities and gum diseases.
Tartar not only threatens the health of your teeth and gums, it's also an aesthetic issue. Being that it's more porous, it more easily absorbs stains. So, if you drink coffee, tea, or you smoke, it's really important to prevent tartar from forming.
How Do I Know If I Have Tartar?
Unlike dental plaque, which is a colorless film, tartar is a mineral formation that can easily be seen if it's above the gum line. The most common indicator of tartar is brown or yellowish teeth or gums. The only sure way to detect the presence of tartar and remove it is to go to your dentist.
How to Prevent the Formation of Tartar
It's important to brush properly, preferably with a tartar control toothpaste, and to floss to reduce dental plaque and tartar formation. Once tartar has formed on your teeth, only a dentist or hygienist can remove it. The process for removing tartar is called "root planing". During the procedure, the dentist or hygienist uses special instruments to remove tartar that he or she can see on your teeth and that which is below the gum line.
