What Should I Do? Learning to Make Good Decisions
At various stages in life, we find ourselves asking, "What should I do?" We cannot avoid having to choose, but we can learn the basics of good decision making so that we can have as few regrets in life as possible. We have to keep in mind that a very young person, unless he is in a real relationship with the Lord, just cannot be expected to have the maturity of adults, even very young adults. And, yes, very young children can have a real relationship with God, one in which they hear the voice of the Lord who guides them. Samuel was a child when he first heard the voice of God. And John the Baptist was still a fetus when he jumped for joy in his mother's womb where he was filled with the Holy Spirit.
Anyway, the ideal situation is to maintain a close enough relationship with God to ask him, "What should I do?" However, sadly, that's not prevalent in today's world. But, there are some common threads that are seen in almost all situations where someone has to make good decisions or suffer grave consequences. What are those "common threads"?
What Should I Do?
The first thing to realize is the importance of knowing what NOT to do in situations where you have some time with which to work. They are:
1. Don't rush into anything.
2. Use the common sense that God has given to you. To NOT use common sense is to behave foolishly.
3. Consider all that you've learned from past mistakes. There's a reason why people say that they know where they're going because they know where they've been.
4. Make a list of the risks involved.
5. Ask yourself if you'll be able to return to where you are if you make a mistake.
6. Evaluate the importance of what you might be giving up forever.
7. Realize that some things cannot be undone. They are permanent. Will you be able to deal with a potential permanent loss?
Once you've thoroughly answered the above questions, you will be in a better position to answer the question, "What should I do?" Many people go through life never taking mental inventory of their situations. In one breath they ask, "What do I do?" In the next breath, they're doing it--whatever "it" is. Many are middle-aged adults who still think and behave like immature children. Then, when their lives are a tangled mess, they fall into depression, yet they continue to act without thinking. They continue to go through life doing only what is comfortable for them. If something is difficult, they drop it, and live only for the moment. Eventually those moments turn into months, the months into years, the years into decades, and the decades into a life time.
Biblical Counsel When Asking: What Should I Do?
What we've said is not based on the teachings of modern psychologists, many of whom are unable to help a world where mental illness is rampant. What we've said is based on Biblical scripture in which we've read that the Lord Jesus is a wonderful Counselor (Isaiah 9:6).
The word of God deals with good decision making. Think before you act! You may never be able to get back what you lose. You may never be able to return to where you left. We read, "...Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears" (Hebrews 12:16-17).
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
