The God of Time, Hormuz, and Ahriman en Persian Mythology
This is not a review of the book, El Demonio Y La Señorita Prym (The Devil And Misses Prym), by Paulo Coelho. But, in the Author's Note of the book, readers find an introduction to Persian mythology that tells a legend--one of the god of time, the creation of the world, and the struggle between good and evil. The author, who was unfamiliar with scripture of the Christian Bible at the time he wrote the book (and may still be unfamiliar), compares Persian mythology with the Genesis account of the beginning of the world.
The god of Time: The Counterpart of the God of the Bible?
Many people mistakenly believe that the mythology of every culture on Earth, in some way, is the same story of the creation of the world by the same spirit that we call God. In other words, they believe that legends are different versions of the same true story. Paulo Coelho wrote, "The first story about Division was born in ancient Persia: the god of time, after creating the universe, realizes the harmony around him, but feels that he's missing something very important: company with whom to enjoy all of that beauty. For a thousand years he prays to have a son. The story doesn't tell us to whom he prayed as he is all powerful, the only lord, and supreme. Despite all, he prays, and, finally, he is found with child." (Translated from the original Spanish.)
No, the god of time in Persian mythology cannot be the God of Israel, the Holy Spirit behind the scriptures of the Christian Bible. To say that he prayed for a thousand years after which he became pregnant is to assign feminine attributes to him. In other words, perhaps the god of time is a woman, a goddess, or maybe he's both, or neither male nor female? The true and living God is male. Exodus 15:3 says, "The LORD is a MAN of war...." We don't read that he is a woman of war. Our article, Is God A Man Or A Woman? expounds on the question of the "gender" of God. You can locate it by searching this site with the keywords: God a man
Another problem with the God of time is that the son that he has is not his equal. In fact, he "gives birth" to twins, Hormuz, the good son, and Ahriman, the bad son. Christ, in the beginning, and in his very essence, is the Word. And, the Word is equal to God, being that he IS God. And, the incarnation of the Word is called, Jesus Christ, Savior of the world.
We read, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth (KJV, St. John 1:1, 14)." We also read that the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the deep (waters) in the beginning (Genesis 1:2). There we have it: God is in more than one "person."
The author, Paulo Coelho, when comparing Persian mythology with the story of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden said, "Eve, now convinced, eats the forbidden fruit and gives some of it to Adam. After that, the original balance in paradise is destroyed, and both are kicked out and cursed. But, God pronounces a mysterious sentence that justifies what the serpent said: 'Look, man has become one of us, knowing good and evil.... The bible doesn't explain to whom the only God is talking. And, if he is the only one, why does he say, 'one of us'?"
It's clear that without the Holy Spirit opening our eyes, we cannot even grasp the most basic truths. When he said, "us", the Lord was teaching us that he is in more than one person--a truth that is repeated throughout the scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. We strongly recommend reading, The Divinity of Jesus: Does It Really Matter. Simply search this site with the keywords: "divinity", and it will appear in the results. We have many easy-to-read articles and Bible studies that deal with the biblical truth that God is in three persons.
Was the serpent right? Did men become gods? We don't think so. If that is what happened, why do we read, "I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes" (Psalm6-7).
When God said that man had become a god, he was referring to the change that took place inside of them--the knowledge of good and evil ACCORDING TO THEIR OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS. Before they ate from the forbidden tree, they called evil what was evil in the eyes of God. And they called good what was good in the eyes of God (his righteousness, not their own). We see the fruit that resulted from Adam and Eve's sin. For example, many say that there's nothing wrong with being homosexual. But, in the eyes of God, it is an abomination. The knowledge of good and evil in man is to be his own god instead of submitting to God who decides what is good and what is evil. And, he has the last word.
No, legends about the creation of the world are not different versions of the truth. They are versions that the enemy has deliberately twisted to raise doubt concerning who God is.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
