New Job: Sink Or Swim!
Despite the equal opportunity laws, some company officials found ways in which to return to the status quo--men for male jobs. Lori, the new hire, would soon find out what her new job had in store for her--it would be sink or swim. The company assigned the newly hired women to faulty-running machines, allowed male employees to create a hostile work place by their foul and sexist language, and established unequal pay rates for equal work performance. As a result, women were either fired, quit, injured resulting in the return to many male dominated companies. As one woman learned in the new job, she lost more by trying to fight the system alone. Her experience is one of many true stories of women attempting to earn a living in male jobs. After reading, share your opinion.
=======
THE NEW JOB
As a result of Federal Government Regulations, The Empty Company which had previously employed men only in its manufacturing plant was forced to hire women. Before the hiring, however, company officials went through the plant shifting men to the less risky machines. That, of course, left the most dangerous and difficult jobs for the new hires—the women.
Lori applied for a job at The Empty Company. When she was called for an interview, she was overjoyed. The interview was a success and she was hired. She had a new job! She was told to report on Monday at 7:00 AM.
Lori arrived early. She wanted to go to the cafeteria, meet some of the other women, have coffee, and settle her anxiety. She was very excited about the new job. It would pay more money than she had ever earned before. Lori would finally be able to buy Scott, her nine-year-old son, the new bike he had wanted for so long. Lori had three children: Jimmy, age twelve; Stephen, who was ten, and Scott. The family had been getting by on her meager income as a housekeeper and her disabled husband’s Social Security Benefits. Matt, her husband had suffered a nervous breakdown and would never be able to work again.
The whistle blew and it was time for Lori to start her shift. She went to Department 756 as she had been instructed and waited to be trained. Hal, her foreman, approached, smiled and greeted her with a hearty handshake. He then directed one of the men to show Lori how to run a machine called a Lathe. Hal wished her “good luck” and left.
Lori received approximately five minutes of instruction and was left on her own in the new job. It was her responsibility to pick up bomb shells weighing forty to fifty pounds a piece, lock each into the Lathe machine and push a button that started the shell spinning. The shells came to her on a conveyor just as fast as Benny could send them. After doing that job for over eight years, Benny could send them pretty fast. As the shell spun to a blur, a blade lowered cutting a groove into the shell. During this process, a hot razor-sharp strip of metal shaving curled from the shell. Using a poker iron, Lori guided the shavings to the floor in order to prevent machine jam up. She did this while dodging red, hot chips of metal flying from the Lathe. The chips would sometimes land and stick to Lori’s clothing burning through to her skin. By the end of the first week, her body was blistered and she had a never-ending backache.
The following Monday, Lori went to the Union Steward to find out how to bid on another job. She was informed that she must complete her three-month probationary period before she’d be allowed to bid. Lori knew that for her family’s sake she must remain at this company in order to have the insurance benefits and salary that it offered. She made up her mind that she’d get through one day at a time for the next three months, bid on an easier job and things would be fine.
As the weeks passed and Lori watched more and more women either quit or be carried out because of injuries, it became clear that there was a conspiracy to get them, the women, out of the plant. Things became so bad that going to work was like going to war and a woman’s enemy, at least at The Empty Company, was a man. With most of the women gone, there was no one for Lori to share conversation with at break and lunch times. If Lori went to the ladies room, she’d return to find her sack lunch smashed or machine oil poured over her food. Forty-eight women had been hired, nine remained after three months.
Lori had passed probation finally and would bid on an easier job as soon as she could track down the Union Steward. Policy dictated that one must go through the Steward. He was on vacation. When Bill, the Steward returned, Lori cornered him to get her bid written up for the position she wanted only to find that the job had been filled. At that point, Bill said to her, “I thought you’d be gone by the time I got back. Don’t you get it, we don’t want you here? There are plenty of nice clerical jobs that are much easier to do than any of the jobs here. You should go and get yourself one of them and leave these jobs to the men who have families to support.” So, there it was out in the open.
Lori felt all the frustration, anger, and weariness of the past three months rise up in her. Without thinking about the consequences she screamed,
“You chauvinist bastard!” and slapped Bill as hard as she could.
She was immediately fired.
Questions over The New Job:
1. Lori filed an appeal to be reinstated. If you decide she should be, present an argument defending your decision, if not, give reasons.why she shouldn't be re-hired.
2. Assume Bill's prejudicial actions were discovered. Do you feel he was acting on instructions from higher authority, his personal feelings, or both? What difference, if any, would it make?
3. What is your opinion of Bill and what should happen to him as a result of his actions and prejudicial statements?
4. Do you agree that Lori should pursue employment more suited to females? If yes, how would you suggest she support her family during the interim?
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
