What Is Gods Name?
In the Old Testament, God began revealing that He has several names and titles. Those names and titles revealed something about His being, characteristics, personality, power, authority, relationship with mankind, and attributes. However, the fullness of all the names and titles of the Lord (His attributes) are now expressed in just one name--Jesus. What is God's name? The correct answer is: His name is Jesus. How do we know that?
The New Testament scripture of Colossians 2:8-9 says, "Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after CHRIST. For in HIM dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily."
What Is God's Name in the Old Testament?
Again, the Lord had several names and titles in the Old Testament as He gradually revealed Himself to His people. Sadly, many of those names and titles have been removed from modern Bibles. In Exodus one of the names/titles of God is: The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. We also read that the Lord is called I AM (Exodus 3:13-14).
F.F. Bosworth, in his book, Christ The Healer, teaches us about the seven redemptive names of God:
1. JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH, meaning, "The LORD is there."
2. JEHOVAH-SHALOM, meaning, "The LORD our Peace"
3. JEHOVAH-RA-AH, meaning, "The LORD is my Shepherd."
4. JEHOVAH-JIREH, meaning, "The LORD will provide."
5. JEHOVAH-NISSI, meaning, The "LORD is our Banner/Victor/Captain."
6. JEHOVAH-TSIDKENU, meaning, "The LORD is our Righteousness."
7. JEHOVAH - RAPHA, meaning, "I am the LORD that healeth thee/I am the LORD thy Physician."
What is God's name? All of these names and titles are His. And, again, all of these names and titles are in one supreme name: JESUS, the name of His Son.
Why the Need to Know God's Name?
In our article, What Is God's Name In Arabic? Is It Truly "Allah"?, the importance of names and titles is thoroughly explained. So, we won't repeat that information here. That article can be located by simply doing a search on our site with the keyword: Allah. The main point to keep in mind is that a name is what identifies something or someone. If we want to speak to Julie, we do not ask for Sarah, because Sarah is not Julie and Julie is not Sarah.
In the natural world, a person certainly can change his or her name. But, a name change doesn't change him or her in essence. In the spirit realm, unlike the natural one, names do not change unless the spirit of the person is actually changed enough to be considered a whole new being. The Lord changed Abram's name to Abraham (Génesis 17:5) after Abraham's faith in God to become the father of many nations. Sarai, Abraham's wife's name, was changed to Sarah to denote that she was no longer barren, but was destined to become the mother of the son that God had promised to Abraham (Isaac). Jacob's name was changed by God to "Israel" (Genesis 32:28) after his spirit was permanently changed following his wrestle with God.
One thing to keep in mind when answering the question, "What is God's name?" is that the Lord Himself does not change (Malachai 3:6). The names and titles of God in the Old Testament have not changed; they are all expressed now in the one name of His Son--Jesus.
We read, "Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of JESUS CHRIST of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole (healed). This is the stone that was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved" (Acts 4:10-12).
God is the only one who saves the souls of men. In whose name are they saved? Only in the name of Jesus, the Son of God, who is one of the three persons of the triune Godhead composed of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. So, what is God's name? God's name is JESUS.
