Jojoba Oil for Hair: The Benefits
Most people, when thinking of using an oil on their hair, assume that the oil is to correct a problem with dryness. And, usually that is the case. But using jojoba oil for hair is a way of correcting another problem--build-up around the roots. Actually, jojoba oil is said to be more of a liquid wax than an oil. However, it certainly looks and handles like most oils.
If your hair is dry, using jojoba oil for hair might be something you will want to consider. But, in my personal opinion, olive oil is superior to all others when it comes to correcting a dry hair and scalp problem. One of the most unique properties I've noticed with oil from the jojoba plant is its ability to clean away build-up around the end of the hair that comes directly out of the scalp.
Some authors who have written on male pattern baldness recommend jojoba oil for hair for its unique quality to cleanse away build-up that might actually interfere with hair growth. So, the oil can be used not only to provide some moisture, but also to do what might be called a deep cleansing. What is nice also is that you can verify for yourself how well a product is working.
Simply pull a strand of hair out of the scalp from the root to see if there is a waxy build-up on the end. If so, you might want to consider using jojoba oil for hair to cleanse that build-up away. Most people can verify that the oil is working to clean the build-up by pulling another hair from the scalp and seeing that it no longer has that waxy build-up. Many people see results in just a couple of consecutive applications. But, others might need three, four, or more.
How to Use Jojoba Oil for Hair:
If you are the kind who does not like for oil to remain on your scalp or hair, there are about three different ways you can use jojoba oil:
1. A pre-wash treatment (the oil does not need to warmed)
2. As an additive to your shampoo (use a shampoo that does not already contain oil)
3. As an additive to your conditioner (use a conditioner that does not already contain oil)
When I say, "jojoba oil for hair," I am not referring to a formula or to a specialized type of the oil, but rather to the straight oil often sold in health foods stores. The label probably will not say "for hair." More than likely, it will simply say, "Pure Jojoba Oil."
To use as pre-wash treatment, simply apply jojoba oil to the scalp. If you are not interested in its moisturizing qualities, there's no need to apply it to the hair. Massage the oil into the scalp for at least five minutes and then wash and condition as usual.
Jojoba oil for hair also can be added to your favorite shampoo. You'll have to guess at how much to use because the oil can interfere with lathering, which depends on the type of shampoo you use. Many people start by adding just a tablespoon to a bottle. Others prefer to pour out a little shampoo and then add jojoba oil to that small amount. This method is best, because if you decide that you do not like jojoba oil, you have not added it to an entire bottle of shampoo. This is not as effective as the pre-wash application of the oil to the scalp.
Jojoba oil for hair can be added to an all natural hair conditioner that you rinse out. Again, due to the variety of conditioners used, it's difficult to specify exactly how much oil you should add. Start with a little, such as a tablespoon to a bottle, and see from there how your hair responds, whether it is too oily or too limp from the moisture given by the jojoba oil.
