Various Names for Satan in the Bible
Just as there are various names for God in the scriptures (all are summed up in the name of Jesus), there are various names for Satan in the Bible. Why? Because names can also be thought of as titles in that they reveal different aspects of a being or different actions taken by that being.
A Simple List of Alternate Names for Satan
All of the following titles are considered names for Satan in the Bible, because they appear in scripture:
1. the Devil
2. Lucifer
3. Son of the morning
4. The adversary
5. The accuser
6. That old serpent
7. Beelzebub
8. Prince of the devils
9. The thief
10. The dragon
Now that we have our list, let's take a look at the use of each of these titles and names for Satan in the Bible. This will help us to understand what the biblical names for Satan reveal about this entity who was created an angel of God.
A Brief Look at the Names for Satan in the Bible
As we look at the scriptures, you will see that sometimes more than one name or title for Satan appear in the passage. This should not confuse you. It should only help to clarify the truths that are being taught about this entity. You will quickly see a patter that shows that Satan is the archenemy of Christ, with a diabolical goal to attack, defy, vilify, twist, corrupt, and destroy all that is of God. You will begin to see that this archenemy of Christ is full of hatred against the followers of Jesus, righteousness, cleanliness, and morality. Your eyes should come open to the truth that fear and great deception are the tools of Satan.
1. The Devil, Beelzebub - We read of when the scribes, who treaded on the dangerous territory of blasphemy against the Holy Ghost, accused Jesus of casting out devils by the power of the Devil. "And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils. And he (Jesus) called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan? And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand." (KJV, Mark 3:22-24).
2. The Thief - Jesus warned, "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy..." (St. John 10:10). Satan comes to steal joy, to destroy faith in Jesus, and to kill the spirit and the body by whatever means he can,
3. The Devil, the Adversary - "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8).
4. The Accuser of the brethren in Christ - "...Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night" (Revelation 12:10). A new Christian might not understand just how in the spirit realm Satan is the accuser. The important thing is to remember that this is one of the names for Satan in the Bible, because it reveals part of his evil work: to accuse God's people.
5. Lucifer, Son of the morning - The passage of Isaiah 14:12-15 speaks of when Satan plotted evil in his mind to attempt to dethrone his own Creator, God himself. We read, "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven. I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds. I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit."
6. Old Serpent, Dragon - We end our list of names for Satan in the Bible with the scripture of Revelation 20:1-3, which reads, "And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, and cast him into the bottomless pit, and...."
