Mom Hates Me, But Why?

Based on a Real Life Events:

Nine year old Stormie's hands trembled and fumbled with the wash cloth and soap as she hurried to finish showering. If only one morning she could avoid being startled by the thundering voice of her mother.

"Stormie, what are you doing in there? It ain't takin' you that long to bathe! Are you rubbin' all over yourself?"

Ms. Bechner's large gray eyes glared at the closed door of the bathroom as though the inanimate object itself was guilty of hiding some sort of sin from her eyes.

"I, uh, almost done," responded the timid voice from inside--the same voice that could find no answer to the question that her thoughts asked her daily. 'Why does my mother hate me?'

It was picture day at Zilckerman Elementary, a place that had become somewhat of an escape from home for Stormie, who stood relishing one of the few moments she enjoyed--the brushing of her long, thick, and bone-straight blond hair. As she reached for a large, pink and blue barrette in the shape of a butterfly, Ms. Bechner reached for her arm. Startled by the forceful grab and tug on her limb that practically dragged her into the kitchen, she failed to notice the broken wing of the butterfly barrette. As she was snatched away from the mirror, she had dropped and trampled on the gift from Timothy, the red-head 5th grader who sat next to her in Ms. Kittle's class.

"You think you're pretty don't you? I know your thoughts, and they're bad," said the husky Ms. Bechner who was now squeezing Stormie's arm harder than the child remembered it being squeezed by the blood pressure cuff that the nurse had applied to her a week before.

"No, I--I--I was just..." Her teeth and tongue couldn't form the words she tried so hard to speak in a desperate attempt to prevent what was about to happen.

Perhaps it was best that her eyes could not see the scissors as they became Ms. Bechner's instrument of punishment.

"Okay children, quiet down and form a straight line along the wall," Ms. Kittle shouted as she gently nudged the restless boys and girls of her class. In her private thoughts, they were sometimes boisterous little organisms, but they were always dear to her. They were children away from home. She worked quickly to establish order, frowning and smiling in the midst of the chattering.

Stormie was silent. Not even the delightful sight of Timothy, her admirer, could erase her unhappiness at what had been her temporary retreat from home. She pretended not to hear the questions her classmates posed.

"What happened to Stormie's hair?" Sarah asked Tamara.

The two girls leaned into each other as they maintained a look of puzzlement and scorn at the sight of the little girl who could now pass for one of the boys. Their comments only mingled with similar remarks of shock and confusion that had been stirred in the other children.

'Thank you Ms. Kittles.' Stormie thought, peering around the corner at her mother who was reading the letter of concern written by the kind teacher. In time, her hair would grow back, and the threat of reliving the punishment she had received for her sin of being born with beautiful blonde locks was gone. That protection gave her some comfort, which was followed by the damper of the lingering unsolved mystery. 'Why does my mother hate me?'

Questions to Ponder: Let Us Know What You Think

  1. Do psychologists really understand parent child relationships?

  2. Was Ms. Bechner a concerned parent who saw a genuine flaw of vanity in her daughter Stormie, a flaw that she was trying to correct?

  3. Does the word of God give us any clues regarding the existence of an underlying problem in Ms. Bechner and/or little Stormie?

  4. Stormie is now an adult, but still periodically ponders the question: Why does my mother hate me? What would you say to her?

  5. If you were speaking with Stormie, what questions would you ask her in order to get a better idea of what might have been the problem/s with her relationship with her mother?

  6. What questions would you ask Stormie's mother, Ms. Bechner?
