Shocking Facts about Vitamins
There should never be any doubt about the important role that natural vitamins and minerals play in maintaining good health. This truth, however, should not be overshadowed by the need to be informed of the facts about vitamins sold in today's health foods stores. Most everyone has heard of the disease Scurvy that once afflicted British mariners. Scurvy develops when the body is severely deficient in vitamin C. The English conquered this problem when they began to supply their sailors with lime juice and learned the importance of stocking their sea vessels with fresh fruits and vegetables. The intake of vitamin C saved their lives by curing the diseases. Hasn't this event among others proven the vital need for vitamins and supplements? Yes, it has. Nevertheless, among the people who are warning of the dangers of taking vitamins and minerals are medical doctors, research scientists, and nutritionists. Fortunately, the public is being enlightened concerning the facts about vitamins being sold today.
Synthetic Vitamins Versus Natural Vitamins
How could taking a vitamin such as vitamin C ever be injurious to one's health? It can be for several reasons. Everything in life must be in balance to obtain and maintain good mental and physical health. There's a vital point that's often overlooked in the true story of the British soldiers who were cured from Scurvy. First, their source of vitamin C came from lime juice, a truly all natural substance. They didn't take a pill, capsule, tablet, injection or any vitamins and supplements that were synthetic. They consumed the lime juice and ate the fruits and vegetables which supplied the needed nutrient as well as other natural vitamins.
Harvard university recently conducted a study on the health benefits of vitamins C, E, and beta-carotene. They compared the efficacy of these nutrients in their synthetic form with natural vitamins in the prevention of cardiovascular maladies. Their study concluded with an affirmation that these substances help guard against heart disease when they are received from food. These same substances proved useless against cardiovascular ailments when consumed in a synthetic form. Why? In spite of the vast medical knowledge that pathologist, nutritionists, and doctors possess, there's much they still do not understand about the body and foods. Approximately 97 percent of the genetic material of a cell remains a mystery. The exact function of this material in living organisms, whether plant or animal, cannot yet be explained (Ronnie Cummins and Ben Lilliston, Genetically Engineered Food: A Self-Defense Guide for Consumers [New York, NY: Marlowe & Company, 2000], 24).
Nutritious foods offer natural vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other substances needed for life in proportions that only God has masterminded. Obviously, the Lord did not intend for man to get his nutrition from vitamins and supplements made in a laboratory. There are times when a situation is desperate enough to warrant the intake of vitamins and supplements, but they are rare. Children in Africa and other Third World nations have been given supplements of vitamin A in a race against time to preserve their sight. Nevertheless, efforts never ceased to plant crops to provide the people with the source of nutrients that is far above any laboratory made substance--that source is food. These are the true facts about vitamins.
The ingestion of lime juice, fresh fruits and vegetables eliminated the British sailors' risk of overdosing. Just as vitamin C has the power to cure Scurvy when supplied by nutritious foods, it also has the power like any other synthetic vitamin or mineral to cause great harm. Prolonged and high dosages greatly increase the risk of developing kidney stones. There may also be interference with the absorption of some of the B vitamins. Anemia and low blood sugar have been reported as "side effects" that appear when too much vitamin C is taken, especially over long periods (Jethro Kloss, Back To Eden [Loma Linda: Back To Eden Books, 1988], 619-621).
Another problem associated with synthetic vitamins and supplements is the risk of ingesting contaminants that could cause potentially fatal diseases and even cancer. ConsumerLab.com is a web site that features product reviews after independent testing has been performed. Recently, a men's multivitamin was found to be contaminated with lead and contained disproportionate amounts of folic acid. The ingestion of lead and too much folic acid is linked to an increased risk of developing prostate cancer.
There never has been a way to enjoy good health without following the rules of nature. Those rules have remained unchanged since the appearance of man who mush eat healthy, drink fresh and pure water, exercise, relieve as much stress as possible, and receive all natural vitamins from wholesome foods. There's no vitamin or mineral pill, tablet, capsule, or liquid that will offer what organically grown fruits, vegetables and grains offer. Vitamins and minerals in foods have the power to greatly assist the body in healing. Synthetic vitamins and supplements have the power to kill. These facts about vitamins should be kept in mind when planning meals.
