The Eucharist Becomes the Flesh of Christ in Catholic Communion?
Some teach that in Catholic communion, the Eucharist, though it starts out as just a symbol of the body of Jesus, actually becomes the flesh of Christ as the priest blesses it. Are we then to think that the wine or grape juice actually becomes the blood of Christ? The answer to both questions is an emphatic "No." But, on what is that answer based? Is it based on biblical scripture, the laws of science, or on what does or does not make sense? Scripture, the teachings of biology and biochemistry, and the application of God-given common sense all let us know that the Eucharist does not become the flesh of Christ in Catholic communion.
The Scripture Behind Catholic Communion
The apostle Paul wrote, "For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me" (1 Corinthians 11:23-25).
Although we clearly read that Jesus called literal bread, "bread," some point out that we also read that he said, "This is my body." Does that prove that in Catholic communion, or any communion for that matter, the Eucharist literally become the flesh of Christ? Keeping in mind that God's word condemns the practice of cannibalism, and that he does not contradict his word, are we to think that the Eucharist turns into the flesh of Christ? Are we to think that the Lord makes an exception for the eating of the flesh of the Son of God?
The Flesh of Christ Proven by Science?
If the Eucharist truly becomes the flesh of Christ, that flesh could be sent to a scientific laboratory and proven to be the flesh of a person. Why has no one placed the Eucharist, after it was blessed by the priest, under a microscope to view the miraculous epithelial cells that would have formed? With a piece of flesh, we would be able to extract deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and gain interesting information about the person from whom the flesh came.
Furthermore, science can even prove the practice of cannibalism. Yes, if a person's flesh is actually ingested and digested, the evidence is present in the excrement. So, those who firmly believe that the Eucharist actually becomes the flesh of Christ could easily have such a claim verified by scientific methods. Many people who have received divine healing were not afraid to return to their doctors to undergo a series of laboratory tests that confirmed that they were no longer sick with the conditions with which they had been diagnosed.
No, the Eucharist does NOT become the flesh of Christ in Catholic communion. It is the symbol of the body of Christ just as the grape juice is a symbol of his shed blood, not actual blood. In the sixth chapter of the New Testament book of St. John, the Lord Jesus speaks extensively on the truth that he is the bread of life. He speaks of eating his flesh and drinking his blood. Notice that in the very same chapter, the apostle Peter says to the Son of God, "...Thou hast the WORDS of eternal life" (St. John 6:68). He didn't say, "Thou hast the flesh of eternal life." Peter understood that to eat the flesh of Jesus and to drink his blood is to obey his word.
