English Word Order Mistakes Even Advanced Native German Speakers Make

german.gif

Below are five prime examples of very common mistakes many native speakers of German make in English, even when they have reached C2 level. No matter how good our pronunciation is, or how broad our vocabulary might be, we will never sound native in a language until we express things the way natives do. Native speaker of German, if you will break the habit of making the following mistakes in English, you will be that much closer to sounding like a native speaker of English. As it is best to learn in small chunks, let us deal with only two areas of mistakes: word order, and the proper translation of "seit".

Native Word Order / Placement In Englsih:

We will use the words "everyday", "also" and "always" as prime examples of word placement mistakes the average native speaker of German consistently makes. We refer to their word placement choices as "mistakes", simply because it is not the word order often used by native speakers of English. Therefore, these "mistakes" sound strange to our ear.

Examples Of Common Word Order Mistakes Native German Speakers Make:

a. Everyday - I go everyday to work.

Undoubtedly this German word order comes from thinking of "Ich gehe jeden Tag zur Arbeit." But in English, we do not tend to place "everyday" after the first conjugated verb...unless it is a form of the verb "to be". So, the native English speaker would express this in either of two ways: "I go to work everyday." Or, "Everyday I go to work." The former is more frequently used in American English. The one time we would say, "I go everyday", is when nothing follows "everyday." We might speak grammatically correct. But, true mastery of a language is also expressing things the way natives express them.

b. Also - This work needs also to be done. (strange word order)

Again, the native speaker of English would say, "This work also needs to be done." Or, "This work needs to be done also." Again, we do not tend to place "also" right after the first conjugated verb, but rather after pronouns or nouns. So, "also" can go after "work" or at the end. But, it sounds strange to place it after "needs"...at least it does in American English.

c. Always - This verb triggers always the dative. (strange word order)

Often, this is what Herr Professor will say in his verb juggling podcast, which we highly recommend for learning German if you are a native English speaker. That word order, however, is the tell-tale sign of non-native English. In native English, we would say, "This verb always triggers the dative." Or, less frequently, "This verb triggers the dative always." "Always" should not follow "triggers". Why are these mistakes so common? Because the speaker is thinking of German word order, which must be suppressed to speak English like natives do.

2. Seit

We often hear sentences such as, "I work here since two years." That sounds very odd to the ear of the native English speaker, and is incorrect...at least in American English. Native speakers of American English say, "I HAVE BEEN working here for two years. "Have been" plus "ing" (the gerund) is how we express, "Ich arbeite seit zwei Jahren hier."

As for written communication in English, even advanced students of English who are native German speakers tend to make the mistake of failing to capitalize certain words. Although in English we do not capitalize all nouns, we DO capitalize some. For example, the names of languages are ALWAYS capitalized (Spanish, English, German, French). And we ALWAYS (notice "always" come after the pronoun "we") capitalize the first personal pronoun "I". So, "ich" should be written "I", even when it is in the middle of a sentence.
