Is There a Difference Between Demons and Fallen Angels?

Giants in the Bible

Claims that there is a difference between demons and fallen angels are directly related to the mention of giants in Genesis. We read, "There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown" (KJV, Gen. 6:4).

Some teach that the "sons of God" were the righteous descendants of Seth, instead of angels, who sired children with unrighteous women. These people cannot explain why mortal men having children with mortal women would produce giants. The scriptural evidence that the "sons of God" are angels is overwhelming. It is from this standpoint that we deal with the false teaching that there is a difference between demons and fallen angels.

Hybrid Spirits of Giants in the Bibles

Some teach that the giants in the Bible were hybrids, because they were half man and half angel. We read that the earth was filled with violence in the days of Noah, and that God decided to destroy the earth and the life in it by the great deluge. The Lord spared only Noah, his wife, his sons, his son's wives, and some of the animals to preserve the species he had created (Gen. 6:5-22). Everyone else perished. This means that the giants in Genesis perished in the flood. It is erroneously taught that the hybrid spirits of the deceased giants survive even until this day--and that they are demons and devils. This, they claim, explains the difference between demons and fallen angels.

Comparing Demons and Fallen Angels

The people who teach that there is a difference between demons and fallen angels do so in a most crafty way. They even reference scripture that appears to support this falsehood. Below is a list of the "differences":

1. Angels do not die, but hybrid spirits do.

2. Angels have their own bodies as seen in scriptures such as Hebrews 13:2, which speaks of entertaining "angels unawares." Obviously, we would not entertain an invisible being, mistaking it for a person. This scriptures proves that angels have the power to transform themselves into the form of mortal man. Demons are never seen doing this in scripture. Instead they constantly seek to possess people to have a body through which they can operate since they do not have the power to materialize as a physical body. This is said to probably be the most important difference between demons and fallen angels.

3. Throughout scripture we read of demon possession, not angel possession. If demons are fallen angels, why does Jesus not speak of casting out angels in his name? He only speaks of casting out demons in his name. The arguments for believing the lie that there is a difference between demons and fallen angels appear to be sound!

4. Demons are not mentioned before the flood. Therefore, it is taught that they are the departed spirits of deceased giants.

5. Scripture says that fallen angels have been chained in darkness and cast down to hell to be reserved until judgment day (2 Pet. 2:4, Jude 6). Crafty teachers in the false doctrine of a difference between demons and fallen angels stress that fallen angels obviously are chained in darkness and cast down to hell. How then are they able to wreak havoc on man?

6. False teachings also stress that scripture says that the lake of fire was prepared for the devil and his angels, not for the devil and his demons (Mat. 25:41).
