How to Have a Relationship With Jesus
Learning how to have a relationship with Jesus begins with faith--the faith to believe that it really is possible to walk with the Lord. It also begins with the knowledge that it is God's will for you to walk with him. We read, "But without faith it is impossible to please him, for he that cometh to God MUST BELIEVE that he is (there), and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him" (KJV, Hebrews 11:6).
We have God's word that those who earnestly seek him will be rewarded with his presence, with a relationship with him. We also are told to, "Draw nigh (close) to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands ye sinners; and purify your hearts ye double minded" (James 4:8). When speaking of how to have a relationship with Jesus, we learn that those who are determined to continue in sin need not expect to draw close to God. We also learn that we never achieve a true walk with God when we believe one day and not the next, or when we have faith only for a while and then we fall back into doubt. This does not in any way mean that God won't help us to overcome sin and unbelief. It just means that those who continue in sin and in a double mind will not enjoy a close walk with God. So, we have the first two answers to how to have a relationship with Jesus:
1. Believe that he is there for you (Hebrews 11:6).
2. Turn away from sin (James 4:8).
If you've never accepted Christ as Lord and Savior or if you are a backslider, we highly suggest the reading of What Is the Sinner's Prayer?.
Scriptures on Having a Relationship With God
God's word actually answers the question of how to have a relationship with Jesus. There are basically five elements to achieve a genuine walk with the Lord. We've covered the first two:
1. Believe that he is there for you (Hebrews 11:6).
2. Turn away from sin (James 4:8).
Once you have received Christ as Savior and Lord, or have returned to him as Lord and Savior, you are ready to take the next three steps. Although they might be looked at as separate "steps," they are actually carried out simultaneously.
The question of how to have a relationship with Jesus cannot be answered without focusing on the need to engage in sincere prayer. There's a very important reason why the Lord himself taught that we ought ALWAYS pray. We read, "And he (Jesus) spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint" (Luke 18:1). The apostle Paul also stressed the need to pray when he said, "Pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:17).
Why is it then that so many people who pray on a regular basis still wonder how to have a relationship with Jesus? And, how can anyone
pray without ceasing? The sad fact is that many people pray as a "ritual." It's just something they know should be done when they go to church. Many people pray to God while stubbornly holding on to their own righteousness. This is nothing short of sin; and we are told that God does not hear the prayers of those who
willfully live in sin (St. John 9:31).
Developing a powerful prayer life is not difficult, but it does require commitment and, most of all, the true desire to have what God calls a clean heart before him. The other two elements related to how to have a relationship with Jesus are the extreme importance to
learn God's word, and obedience to his word.
Having a Personal Relationship With God Through Understanding
Understanding of God's word is more than important to having a genuine relationship with him; it is essential. How can you obey what you do not understand? How can you even know that you have disobeyed if you do not know what disobedience is? The scripture of Proverbs 4:5-7 commands, "Get wisdom. Get understanding. Forget it not, neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forsake her (wisdom) not, and she shall preserve thee. Love her (wisdom), and she shall keep thee. Wisdom is the PRINCIPAL thing; therefore get wisdom, and with all thy getting, GET UNDERSTANDING."
Sadly, getting an understanding of the Bible hardly ever takes place through the lessons of Sunday school classes or Bible classes, including those that claim to be intense. Neither the sermons preached by pastors and ministers nor the completion of seminary studies tend to lead to understanding of the Christian Bible. One of the reasons why so many people who are not hostile against the gospel have ceased to attend church is because they don't get any real answers to real problems and hard questions. While there is no substitute for direct, personal reading and study of the Bible, supplementary materials can be very helpful. They also can cause confusion.
Heavenly Manna specializes in dealing with the hard and sometimes disturbing questions about the Christian Bible, about God, and about life. Here you will find easy-to-read, in-depth content on the paranormal, addictions, spiritual warfare, and so much more. You may even ask questions and make comments to interact directly with Heavenly Manna and/or with other readers. The Bible says, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in FAITH, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways" (James 1:5-8).
Obedience Is Golden
We can repent, pray, and learn God's word, but if we will not obey the Lord, we will not continue to walk with him. All of the answers to how to have a personal relationship with Jesus rest in obedience to him. Jesus asked, "And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say" (Luke 6:46)?
"...Be ye DOERS of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding (looking at) his natural face in a glass. For he boholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed" (James 1:22-25).
Understanding of how to have a relationship with
Jesus requires the following:
1. Believe that he is there for you (Hebrews 11:6).
2. Turn away from sin (James 4:8).
3. Develop a sincere, faithful prayer life.
4. Get understanding of God's word.
5. Obey God's word.
