Millions of Americans suffer from respiratory problems such as chest congestion, symptoms of bronchitis, an asthma attack and the like. Unfortunately, neither over-the-counter nor prescription medications have proven to be 100 percent effective and free of dangerous side effects.
Nature has provided a host of expectorants in foods and in medicinal plants; jalapeño peppers figure among them. Because these expectorants vary in strength and may produce undesirable, but not dangerous, allergic reactions, they should be chosen very carefully. Most everyone is familiar with the decongestive properties of peppermint. Nevertheless, the strongest cup of peppermint tea will do nothing to alleviate the struggle to breathe when suffering symptoms of bronchitis, an asthma attack or cases of pneumonia. Those who "outgrew" asthma attacks often tend to be prone to respiratory weakness and pulmonary infections resulting in a constant, but futile attempt to take in a complete breath.
Jalapeño peppers are rarely mentioned when discussing all natural, effective expectorants for respiratory problems. Why? Few Americans cook with them and "Americanized" Mexican cuisine is often skimpy in the inclusion of jalapeño peppers or lacks them altogether. However, they have brought relief for many sufferers of respiratory problems. Capsaicin, the substance that makes peppers hot, is found in varying amounts depending on the pepper in question. Cayenne is also good in asthmatical asphyxia" (Jethro Kloss, Back to Eden [Loma Linda: Back to Eden Publishing Co., 1988], 127). Asphyxia refers to one's inability to get his breath. Some say that jalapeño peppers are 10 times hotter than red pepper (cayenne), others believe that number is higher. The important fact is that the consumption of jalapeño peppers has proven to be extremely beneficial in achieving easier breathing.
How are jalapeño peppers used to naturally alleviate severe respiratory problems? Are they readily available? Are they economical? First, people who are not accustomed to consuming hot peppers will want to gradually add jalapeño peppers to their diet. They will notice an ability and usually a desire to increase consumption within approximately two weeks if the peppers are eaten at least 3 times per week. Starting with small amounts allows for the discovery of any allergies, but sneezing and watering eyes should not be considered an allergic reaction. Such reactions are due to the presence of capsaicin, a powerful and beneficial stimulant (Kloss 127).
Jalapeño peppers may be added to salsas, spaghetti sauce, vegetable salads, pizza, hamburgers, cold cut sandwiches and any other dish normally seasoned with pepper, including eggs. They may be slightly cooked in with the food or added, preferably, after cooking so as to consume them raw. If a dish containing jalapeño peppers is consumed for dinner, there's the strong possibility of not getting a full night's sleep as the expectorant properties tend to be more active when lying down.
These peppers are sold in the average grocery store in the produce section. Only the freshest of peppers that show no signs of turning red should be chosen. They are very economical, usually selling for less than 1 dollar per pound. They should be kept in a tight plastic container in the refrigerator to keep them fresh as long as possible.
The advantage to making use of the medicines that God abundantly provided for sickness and disease is the ingestion of nutrients. Jalapeño peppers not only offer wonderful relief for respiratory problems as a potent expectorant and stimulant, they also supply vitamin C (Kloss 621).
Most importantly, the discovery of a natural expectorant should not cause sufferers of respiratory problems to simply alleviate the symptoms. Jalapeño peppers offer relief while searching for the root cause of the problem. Consuming the peppers while continuing to be exposed to cigarette smoke and other agents proven to damage the lungs, will not prevent lung or any other type of cancer.
